FireFit Makes a Welcome Return to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo

Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism (FMWBEDT) in partnership with fire departments throughout the region, has secured the return of the Alberta Regional FireFit Competition –a demanding competition testing firefighters’ skill, endurance, and fitness level as they take-on activities commonly performed in emergencies.

FireFit Makes a Welcome Return to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo on June 3 & 4, 2023

Fort McMurray, AB – Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development & Tourism (FMWBEDT) in partnership with fire departments throughout the region, has secured the return of the Alberta Regional FireFit Competition – a demanding competition testing firefighters’ skill, endurance, and fitness level as they take-on activities commonly performed in emergencies.

“We are excited to welcome back FireFit to our region,” said Terri Nielsen, Director of Tourism. “Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is an excellent fit to host the competition because of our strong safety and emergency preparedness culture, fantastic amenities, and warm hospitality. We look forward to welcoming fire departments and visitors from across Alberta to experience all we offer.”

In 1994, FireFit Canada held its first National competition in Vancouver, drawing approximately 50,000 spectators. Since then, the event has grown with FireFit events held from coast to coast and in every province in Canada. This June, firefighting teams from across Alberta will converge in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo to compete for a spot in the Canadian National Championships.

“We are excited to welcome FireFit to MacDonald Island Park in 2023,” said Kelly Dela Ronde, Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo Director of Marketing and Community Engagement. “As the only scheduled FireFit competition in Alberta this year, we are delighted to see it taking place in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo. We look forward to hosting FireFit competitors and spectators at the Island for this prestigious event.”

In addition to showcasing challenging firefighting skills, FireFit builds awareness and interest in firefighting as a highly skilled and rewarding career. This event is for spectators of all ages and will be held at MacDonald Island Park. FireFit continues to grow in popularity and has a loyal following in Canada and the across the globe.

Sport tourism activities such as FireFit contribute to economic benefits from increased visitors, boosts the reputation of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo outside the region, provides cultural and educational opportunities, and fosters a sense of community pride.
